Navigating the VA in South Dakota

South Dakota veterans are served by two VA health care systems and one regional office. Here’s what to know about the system you’ll be working with.

C&P exams · East River

Sioux Falls VA Health Care System

Many C&P exams for eastern South Dakota happen at the Royal C. Johnson Veterans Memorial Hospital on West 22nd Street in Sioux Falls. Others go to a VA-contracted examiner nearby. Knowing what the examiner will measure, and describing your worst days accurately, makes a real difference.

C&P exams · West River

Black Hills VA Health Care System

West River veterans are served by the Black Hills VA Health Care System, with campuses at Fort Meade near Sturgis and in Hot Springs. Exams may also be scheduled with contracted examiners in Rapid City.

Claims processing

The Sioux Falls VA Regional Office

South Dakota’s VA regional office is in Sioux Falls, but the VA spreads claims across a national workload. Your claim may be decided anywhere in the country, so a complete, well-organized file matters more than where you live.

Active duty, Guard & Reserve

Ellsworth AFB & the SD National Guard

From Ellsworth Air Force Base near Rapid City to the 114th Fighter Wing at Joe Foss Field in Sioux Falls, South Dakota has a large Air Force and Guard community. Guard and Reserve claims follow special rules, so the right orders and line-of-duty paperwork are key.

Free options

County & Tribal Veterans Service Officers

South Dakota’s County and Tribal Veterans Service Officers, the SD Department of Veterans Affairs, and organizations like the American Legion, DAV and VFW help veterans file at no cost. We’ll tell you honestly if a free option is the better fit.

Rural veterans

Help Without the Long Drive

Much of South Dakota is hours from a VA medical center. We work entirely by phone and video, so veterans in Pierre, Mobridge, Winner or anywhere West River get the same help as veterans in Sioux Falls.

Rating Increases

How to Increase Your VA Disability Rating

Many South Dakota veterans were rated years ago and never revisited it. There are four common paths to a higher combined rating:

1. File for an increase on a worsened condition

If symptoms are worse than your current rating describes, file for an increase with recent medical evidence. The VA rates on current severity, so recent treatment records and a clear description of flare-ups matter.

2. Claim secondary conditions

A service-connected condition can cause others: sleep apnea or depression secondary to PTSD, radiculopathy secondary to a back injury, knee or hip problems from an altered gait. Each can be rated separately.

3. Look for conditions you never claimed, and TDIU

Tinnitus, PACT Act presumptives and old injuries are commonly missed. If service-connected conditions keep you from holding steady work, Individual Unemployability (TDIU) can pay at the 100% rate.

4. Respond fast if the VA proposes a reduction

If you get a notice that the VA plans to reduce your rating, you generally have 60 days to send evidence, and requesting a hearing within 30 days keeps your payments unchanged until it's held.

FAQ

South Dakota VA Disability Questions

Where will my C&P exam be in South Dakota?

East River veterans are usually examined at the Sioux Falls VA Medical Center (Royal C. Johnson Veterans Memorial Hospital) or by a VA-contracted examiner nearby. West River veterans are often seen through the Black Hills VA Health Care System at Fort Meade or Hot Springs, or by a contracted examiner in Rapid City. Your exam notice lists the location, and some exams can be done by telehealth.

Is there free VA claim help in South Dakota?

Yes. South Dakota has County and Tribal Veterans Service Officers, the South Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs, and accredited VSOs such as the American Legion, DAV and VFW, all of whom help veterans file at no cost. Our free case review can help you decide which route fits your situation.

My VA claim was denied. What should I do?

Read your decision letter to see why it was denied, then choose a review option: a Supplemental Claim if you have new evidence, a Higher-Level Review if you think there was an error, or a Board Appeal. Higher-Level Reviews and Board Appeals must be filed within one year of the decision date.

Do you only help veterans in Sioux Falls?

No. We are based in Sioux Falls and work with veterans across South Dakota, including Rapid City, Aberdeen, Watertown, Brookings, Mitchell, Yankton, Pierre and reservation communities. Everything is done by phone and video, so distance is never a problem.

How long does a VA disability claim take in South Dakota?

The VA posts current average processing times on VA.gov. Because claims are worked nationally, South Dakota veterans see the same timelines as everyone else. Submitting a complete claim with your evidence up front is the most reliable way to avoid delays.

How does the VA calculate a combined disability rating?

The VA uses a "whole person" method: each rating is applied to the remaining non-disabled portion, highest first, then rounded to the nearest 10%. For example, 50% and 30% combine to 65%, which rounds to 70%. Try our free VA disability calculator.

Are you affiliated with the VA?

No. We are a private company and are not affiliated with or endorsed by the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Sioux Falls or Black Hills VA Health Care Systems, the South Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs, or any government agency. You can always file for free at VA.gov.
