Navigating the VA in Rapid City & the Black Hills

West River veterans work with a different VA health care system than the east side of the state. Here’s what to know.

C&P exams

Black Hills VA Health Care System

West River veterans are served by the Black Hills VA Health Care System, with campuses at Fort Meade near Sturgis and in Hot Springs, plus outpatient care in Rapid City. Many C&P exams are also assigned to VA-contracted examiners in Rapid City, and some can be done by telehealth.

Separating soon?

Ellsworth Air Force Base

Airmen leaving Ellsworth can file through the Benefits Delivery at Discharge (BDD) program 180 to 90 days before separation, which can mean a decision shortly after you get out. Flight-line noise exposure is common, so don’t overlook tinnitus and hearing loss.

Claims processing

No Trip to Sioux Falls Required

South Dakota’s VA regional office is in Sioux Falls, but claims are processed through a national workload and filed online, by mail, or with help. You never need to drive across the state to file or follow up.

Free options

County & Tribal Veterans Service Officers

Pennington, Meade, Lawrence and other West River counties have Veterans Service Officers, and Tribal Veterans Service Officers serve veterans in nearby tribal nations. They help file claims at no cost, and we’ll tell you if that’s the better fit.

Rating Increases

How to Increase Your VA Disability Rating

Many Rapid City-area veterans were rated years ago and never revisited it. There are four common paths to a higher combined rating:

1. File for an increase on a worsened condition

If symptoms are worse than your current rating describes, file for an increase with recent medical evidence. The VA rates on current severity, so recent treatment records and a clear description of flare-ups matter.

2. Claim secondary conditions

A service-connected condition can cause others: sleep apnea or depression secondary to PTSD, radiculopathy secondary to a back injury, knee or hip problems from an altered gait. Each can be rated separately.

3. Look for conditions you never claimed, and TDIU

Tinnitus, PACT Act presumptives and old injuries are commonly missed. If service-connected conditions keep you from holding steady work, Individual Unemployability (TDIU) can pay at the 100% rate.

4. Respond fast if the VA proposes a reduction

If you get a notice that the VA plans to reduce your rating, you generally have 60 days to send evidence, and requesting a hearing within 30 days keeps your payments unchanged until it's held.

FAQ

Rapid City VA Disability Questions

Where will my C&P exam be in the Rapid City area?

Often at a Black Hills VA Health Care System location (Fort Meade near Sturgis, Hot Springs, or Rapid City) or with a VA-contracted examiner in Rapid City. Your exam notice lists the location, and some exams can be done by telehealth.

I’m separating from Ellsworth AFB. When should I file?

You can file through the Benefits Delivery at Discharge (BDD) program 180 to 90 days before your separation date. Filing early can mean receiving a decision soon after you leave the service.

Is there free VA claim help in Rapid City?

Yes. Pennington County and other West River counties have Veterans Service Officers, Tribal Veterans Service Officers serve tribal communities, and accredited VSOs like the American Legion, DAV and VFW help at no cost.

Do I have to go to Sioux Falls for my claim?

No. Claims are filed online, by mail, or with help, and the VA processes them nationally. We work with Rapid City veterans entirely by phone and video.

Are you affiliated with the Black Hills VA?

No. We are a private company and are not affiliated with or endorsed by the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Black Hills VA Health Care System, or any government agency.
