Navigating the VA From Brookings

Brookings doesn’t have its own VA clinic. The Sioux Falls VA Medical Center, about an hour south, is the closest VA medical center.

Health care & exams

Sioux Falls VA Medical Center

Brookings-area veterans typically receive VA care and C&P exams through the Sioux Falls VA Health Care System, about an hour away, or with VA-contracted examiners. Some exams can be done by telehealth.

Student veterans

SDSU Student Veterans

South Dakota State University has a large student veteran community. GI Bill benefits and VA disability compensation are separate, so you can use one and receive the other. Many recently separated veterans never file for conditions from service, and filing within a year of discharge can protect an earlier effective date.

Recently separated

File Within a Year of Discharge

If you file within one year of leaving the service, your effective date can go back to the day after you separated. That can mean months of back pay. See our first-time claim guide.

Rating Increases

How to Increase Your VA Disability Rating

Many Brookings-area veterans were rated years ago and never revisited it. There are four common paths to a higher combined rating:

1. File for an increase on a worsened condition

If symptoms are worse than your current rating describes, file for an increase with recent medical evidence. The VA rates on current severity, so recent treatment records and a clear description of flare-ups matter.

2. Claim secondary conditions

A service-connected condition can cause others: sleep apnea or depression secondary to PTSD, radiculopathy secondary to a back injury, knee or hip problems from an altered gait. Each can be rated separately.

3. Look for conditions you never claimed, and TDIU

Tinnitus, PACT Act presumptives and old injuries are commonly missed. If service-connected conditions keep you from holding steady work, Individual Unemployability (TDIU) can pay at the 100% rate.

4. Respond fast if the VA proposes a reduction

If you get a notice that the VA plans to reduce your rating, you generally have 60 days to send evidence, and requesting a hearing within 30 days keeps your payments unchanged until it's held.
