Navigating the VA From Aberdeen

Aberdeen veterans are part of the Sioux Falls VA Health Care System, with a VA clinic right in town.

Health care

Aberdeen VA Clinic

The Aberdeen VA Clinic, part of the Sioux Falls VA Health Care System, provides outpatient care locally. Treatment records from the clinic are important evidence for your claim, so make sure your symptoms are documented at every visit.

C&P exams

Where Exams Happen

C&P exams may be scheduled with a VA-contracted examiner closer to home, at a VA facility, or by telehealth for some conditions. If an exam location is a long drive, contact the scheduler early. Missing an exam usually means the VA decides without it.

Rural veterans

Farming, Ranching & TDIU

Many northeast South Dakota veterans keep working the family farm or ranch despite service-connected conditions. Part-time or family-business work can still be considered marginal employment for TDIU, so the details of the work matter.

Rating Increases

How to Increase Your VA Disability Rating

Many Aberdeen-area veterans were rated years ago and never revisited it. There are four common paths to a higher combined rating:

1. File for an increase on a worsened condition

If symptoms are worse than your current rating describes, file for an increase with recent medical evidence. The VA rates on current severity, so recent treatment records and a clear description of flare-ups matter.

2. Claim secondary conditions

A service-connected condition can cause others: sleep apnea or depression secondary to PTSD, radiculopathy secondary to a back injury, knee or hip problems from an altered gait. Each can be rated separately.

3. Look for conditions you never claimed, and TDIU

Tinnitus, PACT Act presumptives and old injuries are commonly missed. If service-connected conditions keep you from holding steady work, Individual Unemployability (TDIU) can pay at the 100% rate.

4. Respond fast if the VA proposes a reduction

If you get a notice that the VA plans to reduce your rating, you generally have 60 days to send evidence, and requesting a hearing within 30 days keeps your payments unchanged until it's held.

FAQ

Aberdeen VA Disability Questions

Is there a VA clinic in Aberdeen?

Yes. The Aberdeen VA Clinic is part of the Sioux Falls VA Health Care System and provides outpatient care locally.

Do I have to drive to Sioux Falls for a C&P exam?

Not always. Exams are often assigned to VA-contracted examiners, and some conditions can be examined by telehealth. Your exam notice lists the location; contact the scheduler right away if it isn’t workable.

Can I get TDIU if I still help on the family farm?

Possibly. Work in a protected environment like a family business, or earnings below the poverty threshold, may be considered marginal employment rather than substantially gainful employment. The details need to be documented carefully.

Is there free VA claim help in Aberdeen?

Yes. Brown County and surrounding counties have Veterans Service Officers, and accredited VSOs like the American Legion, DAV and VFW help veterans file at no cost.

Are you affiliated with the Aberdeen VA Clinic?

No. We are a private company and are not affiliated with or endorsed by the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Sioux Falls VA Health Care System, or any government agency.
